"Dialogues"

On the occasion of the death of Johannes Ockeghem, Josquin Deprez composed "Nymphes des Boyes," upon which the present piece is based. In this piece, material from Josquin's lament is interrupted by passages based on Ockeghem's "Ma bouche rit," and thereby the two composers are able to converse; hence the title of the piece. Desprez's mourning music returns ever stronger throughout the work, despite the consoling strains of Ockeghem's voice. The conflict between these two moods is manifested through the increasingly distant metric superimpositions between the material drawn from the works, giving the piece its dramatic arc. The resolution of this metrical conflict coincides with Josquin's acceptance of that which must be, and the two strands of material are reconciled at the piece's climax.

"The Auguries of Innocence" is an opera-oratorio based on a sacred drama involving the angel Abdiel. The libretto weaves together extant, primarily secular texts to tell the story of man's fall and subsequent redemption through the grace of divine mercy. The image at left is taken from a funerary monument in a church cemetery outside of Florence.
